I am trying to think and plan for what we will be doing in the next few months. Normally I sit down with the children and we make a big mind map. We pray through what we want to do and ask for God's guidance on their education. I intend to carry on in this way.
Thanks to friends of ours we are now the proud owners of 7 extra boxes of books on all sorts of subjects. Really useful books. The problem with books is that they show you all the things that you are not teaching your children. I now have books on all lots of different periods of history, tons of science books, books on craft and cookery. We are set up for a long time! However, I am completely overwhelmed so I am sat here this morning looking at what I want to achieve. Mind you Christmas can be the season of feeling overwhelmed!
Why do we educate our children? What are we trying to achieve in this? There are plenty of people out there with a "good" education that are not using it. There are also people who did badly in school who are successful. What is a "good" education? What do I mean by successful? Do I mean money? Do I mean happiness? If so, how do you educate for happiness? What do the children need to know, understand, desire? Do I need to educate at all? Is character the most important thing?
Do they need to go to university? Do they need to take exams? What if they want to go into a particular specialisation? Can I provide that sort of education?
We are a Christian family. All I desire for my children is that they will walk with the Lord all the days of their lives. He will provide the guidance. So I am sat here seeking His guidance. Thinking out loud......
"We have forgotten that education, if it is anything, is a conversation between the generations in which the young are introduced to the best that has been thought and written by men and women who care about the subjects they teach - who care not because a qualification in their subject might lead to a better job, but because the subject itself is intrinsically important."
Chris Woodhead "Class War - The State of British Education"
Now back to that conversation......
