We seem to be settling into homeschooling a bit better now. One of the things that I had hoped would change was the rush over breakfast. Today we baked a Dutch Puff thanks to Kim at Large Family Logistics (I can't link remember!) with apples in it. I had toast! The kids ate and were therefore much better behaved over the maths. Kim has 8 kids so we have leftovers!!
It has also been a phone day! I keep getting calls which is nice but it leaves the kids a bit lost. When a market research lady called at the door I abandoned all hope of the letters we were writing and let them go off and play. They came back after a few minutes with a bucket of stones. Apparently this is ballast for the HMS Victory that is being constructed. This model will have sails but only because that makes it look like the Victory. Callum is hoping to ask Grandad for a spare motor that he can fit (not historically correct but fun!). By the time I had finished my survey, they had created scales in the garden with a spirit level (didn't even know we had one) and were weighing the ballast into the different sections of the boat. Something to do with floating I think! I am redundant!
Anyway, we have had our lunch so onwards and upwards! Now about those letters...
Well we had a great day today at the HMS Victory. Portsmouth is about as far as we would venture in a day. The kids start to get a bit grumpy by the time we get there. Callum has photographed every sports car along the way and Isobel has read every book she has brought with her. Ewan does a good line in jokes (aaargh!) and so we are always grateful to arrive!
The Victory is great for kids. We learnt all about the way the sailors lived and died. Ewan was a bit disappointed that they did not have "at least one bit of Nelson's body that we could look at" but he was quite interested in Nelson's body being stored in a barrel of brandy.
Actually I think I enjoyed the HMS Warrior more because we could walk around and touch stuff (Victory is guided). We were able to spend hours (and I mean hours!) on there.
It is fantastic value - £46 for a family of 5 for all the attractions. The HMS Warrior, HMS Victory (ship and museums), The Mary Rose (ship and museums), the Action Stations (great for science and with a helicopter simulator), boat ride around the harbour and a few other bits and bobs. We have spent 3 full days there and not been bored once. One warning though - the food and drink are hugely expensive (£1.60 for a Fruit Shoot!).
